Higgs Boson 4 September 2014
Reality is something we take for granted but live in it every billionth of a second on this Earth, a planet that is orbiting our Sun at 67,000 miles per hour in a Solar System that is hurling around the Milky Way Galaxy at 515,000 miles per hour. Our world is surrounded by billions of Galaxies drifting away from us in a forever expanding universe. Our reality includes all our love ones, friends, pets, trees, flowers, automobiles, people we don’t know, and things too numerous to list.
Is this all of reality? NO! Another mysterious and invisible reality encompasses all of us and the world we live in and it’s very real. We are not going to discuss God for now, but something that the most brilliant minds of our species have uncovered and are sharing with all of us. Welcome to “Quantum Field Theory, Quantum Chromo-dynamics (QCD), and Quantum Mechanics”!
Did you know that our physical Human Bodies consist of 98% energy and only 2% solid matter? Actually this is true of all physical things. And there is more: all of us generate an Electromagnetic Field that prevents us from walking through walls or each other. Knowledge of this reality has led to the creation of Super Computers that have transformed our society, GPS satellites that direct us to our driving destinations, Medical imaging that guide doctors to save our lives and apps on our IPhones that tells what’s in our refrigerators.
We are going to tackle our Quantum Reality by showing how our Human Body is made up of 98% energy and emerged from a collection of invisible Quantum Fields. We will start by analyzing our bodies at the highest visible level and progressively stepping down the other levels until we reach the Quantum Fields.
First our bodies are made up of 9 major organ systems: 1) The integumentary system (Skin and associated structures), 2) The musculoskeletal system (muscles, skeleton), 3) The respiratory system (breathing passages, lungs, and muscles of respiration) 4) The circulatory system (heart, blood, and blood vessels), 5) The digestive system (mouth, esophagus, stomach, and intestines), 6) The excretory system (kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra), 7) The nervous system (sensory organs, brain, spinal cord, and nerves), 8) The endocrine system (hormone-secreting glands and tissues), 9) The reproductive system (no need for a description here).
Our next stop is at the “Cell” level. Our bodies consist of about 75 trillion cells organized into 200 different types and grouped into 4 cell classes: 1) epithelial tissues (body surface and lining of internal organs), 2) muscle tissues, 3) nerve tissues, 4) connective tissues (connects the different types of cells and various body structures).
Stepping down from the Cell level we arrive at Water, organic compounds and inorganic minerals. Our bodies are made up of about 60% water. The organic compounds are grouped into: 1) lipids (fats, phospholipids, and steroids - major structural components of the human body), 2) proteins (important constituent of the cell membrane), 3) carbohydrates (sugars and glycogen), and 4) nucleic acids (genetic materials of the body, DNA RNA).
The major inorganic minerals of the Human Body are calcium, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium, and iron.
We now have arrived at the element level of our Human Bodies. All the above mentioned organ systems, cells, organic compounds, inorganic minerals are made from Elements.
It’s time for a flash back to our fond memories of High School Chemistry, and the good times we had with our favorite Periodic Table of Elements. In that exciting Table we discovered our favorite Oxygen element with an atomic number of 8 (8 protons and 8 electrons) and the other Elements that make up the Human Body:
Oxygen (8 Protons & Electrons) 65%
Carbon (6 Protons & Electrons) 18.5%,
Hydrogen (1 Proton & Electron) 9.5%,
Nitrogen (7 Protons & Electrons) 3.2%,
Calcium (20 Protons & Electrons) 1.5%,
Phosphorus (15 Protons & Electrons) 1%
Potassium, Sulfur, Sodium, Chlorine,
Magnesium 1.2%
Boron, chromium, cobalt, copper, fluorine,
iodine, iron, manganese, molybdenum,
selenium, silicon, tin, vanadium, zinc 0.1%
Elements are different types of Atoms depending on the number of Protons and Electrons. The percentages account for the number of Atoms of that Element in our bodies. Example: Our bodies are made of 65% of Oxygen Atoms and each Oxygen Atom consist of 8 Protons and 8 Electrons. The total number of Atoms in an average Human Body from all the above Elements is about:
7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Atoms
If you enjoy donuts and pizza like I do, add another zero to the Atoms number to account for donut and pizza atoms.
Each Atom in our bodies is made up of Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons. If we peak inside the Atom:
WE ENTER THE QUANTUM WORLD!!!
A WORLD Where 98% Of The Weight of the Atom Is From The Energy Of Spinning Quarks and Phantom Quarks At The Speed Of Light Inside The Atom: Quantum Chromo-dynamics!
A World Where Quarks Emerge from Quantum Fields: Quantum Field Theory!
A World Where Quantum Mechanics Reveals To Us Mortals How Quantum Chromo-dynamics And Quantum Field Theory Mysteriously Work!
In the future episodes of the Higgs Boson, we will stumble together around the Quantum World.
