The Higgs Boson - 2
In April 2013, I attended a lecture at Fermi Lab by Scientist Chris Quigg, who is one of the Physicists working on the Higgs Boson (God Particle) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. During the lecture He kept referring to the Higgs Boson as very important in providing mass (quantity of matter) to Electrons but not to Protons and Neutrons.
In my “The God Particle – 1” article, the main premise was that UP Quarks and Down
Quarks passing through a Higgs Boson gain mass and became Protons & Neutrons
while mentioning very little about the Electron association with the Higgs Boson.
From “Higgs Boson -1 “
2 UP Quarks + 1 DOWN Quark passing through a Higgs Boson = Proton
1 UP Quark + 2 DOWN Quarks passing through a Higgs Boson = Neutron
I started to have doubts about the above statements and to my great fortune was
given an opportunity to ask Dr. Quigg if the above statements were correct.
Dr. Quigg reply was that: Yes that Quarks passing through a Higgs Field gain mass
(matter) to become Protons and Neutrons but he followed this affirmation by an
astonishing “but” Protons and Neutrons do NOT need the Higgs Boson to acquire mass. The 2 UP Quarks and 1 Down Quark, bound together by the Gluon Boson are spinning at tremendous velocities inside the Proton and could gain mass from this action. A similar story applies to the Neutron.
On the other hand Electrons are fundamental particles with no Quarks as is the case
in the Protons and critically need the Higgs Boson to acquire mass. Without mass, Electrons would not be attracted to Protons and would not spin around nuclei of Protons and Neutrons. As a result Atoms could not form resulting in no Sun, no Earth, no us, just a universe filled with Protons.
If you follow the Higgs Boson story in the public media you may notice the
terminology of Higgs Boson and Higgs Field are used interchangeably.
To understand the difference between the Higgs Boson and the Higgs field you need
to be aware of special property of all Bosons and that is they can occupy the same spot
in space. This means that a tremendous large number of Higgs Bosons can be located in one spot and that spot becomes a Higgs Field. Combine all the spots together and you have a Higgs Field everywhere in the universe.
All of us are surrounded and live inside the Higgs Field. If the Higgs Field would
shut down, atoms would disintegrate and physically we and all of creation would
disappear.
The story of the Higgs Boson, the Standard Model, and Quantum Mechanics is by no
means complete and scientists are continuing their research to discover more mysteries in this scientific endeavor. Stay tune as we continue to explore the world of Particle Physics and Quantum Mechanics on this web site.
